Affectionately known as Hotlanta or the ATL, Atlanta, Georgia is known for its prominent role in the Civil Rights Movement and as the home of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. With a metropolitan area population of 5.2 million, Atlanta (423,000) is the headquarters of locally-established companies Coca-Cola and Home Depot. Macon (95,000) and Sandy Springs (91,000) are the largest suburbs.

In 2004, the average personal income for an Atlanta resident was $33,838, slightly above the national average. Personal income for Atlanta residents has mushroomed, growing 9.5% over the past 35 years, 27% over the national average according to the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Several major companies have headquarters in or near Atlanta, including:
  • Bell South
  • UPS
  • Delta Airlines
  • Cingular

While the automobile industry in the area is in decline, with schedule plant closing for GM and Ford, Atlanta remains a central source of cable television programming. Ted Turner founded CNN in Atlanta, and Time Warner Channels such as TNT and the Cartoon Network are Atlanta-based.

Atlanta is also home to over 1,000 churches and a large number of faith-based schools. Recently, Atlanta opened the world's largest aquarium, the Georgia Aquarium, while Stone Mountain is the world's largest exposed piece of granite rock. A historically rich city, Atlanta boasts a variety of museums, including:
  • The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site
  • The Carter Center and Presidential Library
  • The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum
