Learning to Educate

Education careers typically require a college degree. Two in three education workers have a bachelor's degree or higher. Professionals at the administrative or postsecondary level typically hold a graduate degree in an education specialty.

Associate's Degree

A two-year associate's degree is sufficient for certain administrative and assistant roles such as office clerk or teacher assistant. Some colleges offer specific education administration or teacher aide degree programs.

Bachelor's Degree

The most common qualification in the industry, the four-year bachelor's degree offers the educational breadth necessary to perform effectively as a teacher or school administrator. Teachers typically prepare for the classroom with an additional teacher training program, which involves classroom practice teaching.

Master's Degree

A master's degree is required for many higher-level administrative positions, such as principal, assistant principal, librarian, and school counselor. Teachers in some states are encouraged or even required to pursue a graduate degree in education within the first few years on the job. Online degrees make it possible for teachers to acquire this career training while they work.

PhD

A doctoral degree is the standard qualification for careers at the postsecondary level. College professors must have a PhD in a particular subject area to teach at a four-year college or university. College deans and other higher education administrators also have a doctorate in a specific field or in Education Administration or Educational Leadership.

The Outlook for Education Careers

With school enrollments on the rise and a wave of retirements on the horizon, prospects are strong for education careers. The Department of Labor projects an overall wage and salary employment growth of 11 percent through 2016. Earnings for teachers depend heavily on education level and experience. Postsecondary teachers such as college professors earn the most, at $56,120 in 2006; high school teachers reported an average salary of $52,450 in 2007. Education administrators made $85,870 at the college level, and $82,120 at the K-12 level in 2007.

Online Learning for Career Advancement

With salaries closely tied to educational attainment, education professionals face a powerful incentive to boost their credentials. Online schools offer a convenient resource for obtaining career skills while balancing work and family commitments.

Education is a rewarding profession with a bright future. Whether you choose to work directly with students or support their development as an administrator or counselor, you will have the satisfaction of helping people develop their potential and achieve their dreams.
